Short is going to be a bit of a trick with thick hair, although I'm sure you can make it work if you really want to. My hair is just on the thick end of *fine*, and it works quite well as a "really short" style (almost all 0-2"). It's a fluffy mess long.

If you have or can find a stylist that really knows what he/she is doing, then I'd see what he/she has to say about the matter. From years of having had really short hair. . . there's a lot less margin for error as your hair gets shorter and shorter, so you need someone who knows how much to leave where on a given head. Messing up long hair a bit = so what, cut off a little more and it'll be fine; messing up short hair a bit = it may stick up funny for a week or two.
